BAYMEC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

OUR MISSION

The BAYMEC Community Foundation is dedicated to the creation of a more equal future for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) community in Silicon Valley and neighboring regions.

Through a balanced approach of equitable programs, the BAYMEC Community Foundation (BCF) strives to engage in community discussion on LGBTQ inclusion and equal rights, ensure the equal access of LGBTQ-supportive safety-net services, chronicle local LGBTQ history and culture, and foster the next generation of LGBTQ leaders.

OUR STORY

The BAYMEC Community Foundation is an organization driven by progressive ideas, bold actions, and a strong foundation of support. Dealing with the challenges of today requires problem-solvers who bring different perspectives and are willing to take risks. BAYMEC Community Foundation emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words. In 2013, the Bay Area Muncipal Elections Fund, or BAYMEC for short, decided to establish a nonprofit foundation dedicated to education, services, and issues affecting the local LGBTQ community. BCF is tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization governed by an independent board of directors.. In 2019, the BCF board decided to place former Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager as its first Executive Director.

LGBTQ+ Equality in Silicon Valley: A 45-year retrospective of the struggle

The Baymec foundation is excited to announce its sponsorship of a new exhibit, entitled “LGBTQ+ Equality in Silicon Valley: A 45-year retrospective of the struggle.”  This exhibit will detail the rich history of LGBTQ+ culture and activism in the South Bay.

Pride month has evolved into a celebration with parades and festivals, but it did not start that way.  It was in 1976 that the first San Jose pride event (called Gay Freedom Day Rally) was held in St. James Park. Although attended by a small crowd, it signaled the beginnings of an LGBTQ+ community that was emerging from the shadows within San Jose as well as San Francisco and into the public sphere as never before.

It can be difficult for a person—especially for a young person or someone who did not experience it firsthand—to fathom how tough it was for the LGBTQ+ community over the decades. Even many LGBTQ+ people don’t know the magnitude of the struggle, especially at the local level.   Now more than ever, the diverse stories of LGBTQ+ people need to be told.

Originally planned as an exhibit in the Arbuckle Gallery at History San Jose but delayed because of COVID-19, this project will first come to life as a virtual exhibit.  The exhibit will include an exhaustive timeline of major events in the LGBTQ+ community, a history of LGBTQ+ organizations, bars and publications, information on topics such as HIV/AIDS, gay marriage, the transgender community, drag history, and tributes to local pioneers.  We will be excited to unveil this exhibit in the coming months.

Below are two booklets on LGBTQ history, one on the battle against HIV/AIDS and one on the stuggle for equality.  These are examples of the kind of historical narrative that will be included in this project.
